Eastern Platinum Marikana Operations Proposed Expansion Project BA & EMPr
Sibanye-Stillwater Limited (Sibanye-Stillwater) is an international mining company that produces gold and the full suite of Platinum Group Metals (PGMs). Eastern Platinum (Pty) Ltd (EPL), which is part of the Marikana operation is a subsidiary entity of the Sibanye-Stillwater Limited Group of companies. EPL currently mines, processes, refines and markets Platinum Group Metals (PGM) and base metals at various operations near Rustenburg in the North West Province.
EPL is proposing to expand its existing facilities to improve operational efficiency while ensuring environmental sustainability and management. To achieve this aim, the following activities are required:
- Expansion of the Saffy shaft Waste Rock Dump (WRD) to provide sufficient capacity to accommodate waste generated over the remaining Life of Mine (LoM) of the Saffy shaft;
- Expansion of the EPL Chrome Retreatment Plant (CRP) chrome stockpile area to optimise resource management; and
- Establishment of a new truck staging area to alleviate truck congestion.
The proposed Expansion Project triggers listed activities in terms of the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations, 2014 (EIA Regulations, 2014) (as amended) (Government Notice No. R982 of 4 December 2014 as amended) which were promulgated under the National Environmental Management Act, 1998 (Act No. 107 of 1998) (NEMA) which requires a Basic Assessment process to be followed. OMI Solutions (Pty) Ltd (OMI) has been appointed as the independent Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP) to undertake the Basic Assessment process in support of the Integrated Environmental Authorisation (IEA) required for the proposed Expansion Project.
