Nokeng Wiltin Prospecting BA

Nokeng Fluorspar Mine (RF) (Pty) Ltd (Nokeng Mine) is an open cast mine which is situated approximately 70 km north of Pretoria and falls under the jurisdiction of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality. The mine has been in operation since 2019 and is in possession of a Mining Right and an approved Environmental Management Programme (30/5/1/2/2/293 MR), stamped and signed on 26 July 2011, which was granted by the then Department of Mineral Resources. Subsequent to that an Environmental Authorisation (EA) with Reference Number: GAUT 002/10-11/E0197 was issued on 04 April 2013 by the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and rural development (GDARD). A Water Use Licence (Licence No.: 04/B31D/ABCGIJ/2223), dated 23 July 2013 was issued by the Department of Water Affairs for the Nokeng Mine, amended in 2017, and again amended as the current license on 2 June 2022, (License no 16/2/7/B100/C176).

The mineral to be prospected is fluorspar. The geological mapping was conducted and identified that fluorspar mineralisation occurs at Wiltin which is located immediately to the south of the Plattekop deposit within the Nokeng Mining Right Area.

Prospecting activities will include both invasive and non-invasive methods. Non-invasive methods include data capturing of all relevant geological data, a geophysical survey which utilises digital data to confirm proposed drill locations and structures as well as analytical work of the samples taken. Invasive methods will include the core drilling (approximately 35 holes phase 1 and 2 with 24 additional for phase 3) to ascertain the stratigraphy sequence and reef horizons of the ore body.

The proposed project triggers Listed Activities in terms of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Regulations, 2014 (GN R982 of 4 December 2014, as amended) (the “EIA Regulations, 2014”) promulgated under the National Environmental Management Act, 1998 (Act No. 107 of 1998) (NEMA). The project specifically triggers activities in Listing Notice 1 and 3 thus requiring a Basic Assessment (BA) process to be undertaken. This process requires a comprehensive public consultation process.
